Active Magnetic Bearing Technology
The engineering that lets a rotor spin without touching anything.
Explore AMB technology
Active magnetic bearings (AMBs) open up new possibilities for high-speed, efficient and reliable industrial machinery operation. Explore how AMBs work, what benefits they offer and how they compare with conventional bearing technologies.
What are AMBs?
Active magnetic bearings are advanced bearing solutions that use magnetic forces to levitate the rotating shaft of a machine. The technology uses three core components working together: sensors continuously measure the shaft’s position, a controller processes that data and actuators adjust the magnetic force to keep the shaft centered. Think of them as the eyes, brain and muscles of the system. SpinDrive supplies complete AMB systems, with all functional parts, accessories and controller included. We work closely with OEMs to integrate the entire AMB systems into their rotating machinery.
AMBs vs. other bearing types
High-speed machinery can use several bearing technologies, including air bearings, fluid-film bearings and high-speed ball bearings. Active magnetic bearings offer distinct advantages in demanding high-speed applications. Fully contactless and oil-free, they enable a wide speed range, starting from zero rpm.
Condition monitoring and digital bearings
Built-in condition monitoring is an inherent advantage of active magnetic bearings. Because the AMB controller continuously tracks rotor position, the system can detect changes in rotor behavior, helping operators catch abnormalities before they become failures. No additional sensors are required, and the installed system can be connected remotely for monitoring and field service.
